5 Website Misunderstandings

According to Google Blogoscoped, the following are 5 common web misunderstandings.  To see the full article, click here.

Misunderstanding #1: We Need Separate Print Pages- This idea fails because bloggers link to print pages due to how much easier they are to read.  The right way to go about doing this is to create a separate style sheet for medium print, and if the browser does it correctly, it will display a print preview.

Misunderstanding #2: We Need an Alternative Mobile Web.. WML, the WAP’s Wireless Markup Language, is dead today. The fact that the same document can be used in a variety of circumstances, and that the browser simply requests the stylesheet needed – or uses its own, by default – is not an intuitive one to grasp. Most real world objects don’t behave that way, changing their shape and behavior depending on what is needed. So today, you’ll see many companies creating an alternative mobile web when, in fact, it is really not necessary.

Misunderstanding #3: Accessibility Means to Always Use Alt Text- The meaning of alt text serves as a replacement when the HTML image cannot be seen.  Some of the reasons that images may not be accessible include any one of the following: the user is blind, the medium doesn’t support images, the user disabled images on purpose so she can browse on low-bandwidth. However, if the image is only being used to illustrate a point that is later repeated in the text, then there really isn’t a need to use alt text to begin with.

This is an exciting week for me, and hopefully you too. Why?

When was the last time you used a Yellow Book? Personally, I can’t remember. I dusted mine off the shelf for this episode, and I’d love to know if you’re like me, using online tools to search for local suppliers, rather than books like the Yellow Pages.

The question that’s raised is all about how to spy on competitors pay per click campaigns. It is possible, and I’ve got two web resources for you, one of which is free.

Many people mistype words when they type a domain name into a browser. This is for a number of reasons that I’ll explain, some of which might be surprising to you. Fortunately, there’s an excellent free tool that will tell you what the likely mistakes are for any domain name, even one you haven’t registered yet. This is really useful because you might want to register some of those mis-spelled names and register them, in order to forward the visitor to your website.

Finally, the show wraps up with a big marketing lesson from Dell, the computer company. Dell sent me an invitation to their ’signature event’ which caught my attention, and so I’ll explain why ‘event’ based marketing is so effective for ANY business. Yes, including yours.

Yep, many of the big airlines are still screwing their own business up with bad customers service, silly charges, and other nonsense. Long time viewer of the show, Meny Hoffman shares his experience about trying to upgrade on Continental. They wanted to charge him a $250 PENALTY for upgrading to a higher class of fare! The extra $1200 is apparently not good enough for greedy Continental Airlines.

United Airlines are still feeling the heat from Dave Carroll, who created the “United Breaks Guitars” video that’s been seen over 5 million times on YouTube already! Dave’s just released video #2, with a new song. It’s great!

Then there’s UPS who are still irritating me no end. They won’t deliver to our new studio address in Salt Lake City because the address isn’t in their computer! Yet USPS and Fedex have no problem. I HATE the “our computer says” type of excuse. Fix it! Computers don’t think for themseves, they do whatever humans tell ‘em to do!

This week’s question is all about the t-shirts I wear on the show. What’s the marketing signifcance? Watch the show to discover the answer.

You can now offer printable coupons on your website, thanks to OneMinteCoupons.com, I’l share that nifty click with you this week, it’s really useful.

I love hearing YOUR succes stories, so keep ‘em coming. You can submit your story using the ‘ask andrew’ link at the top of the page, and you can win an incredible prize, something from my travels ;)

A few weeks ago, JetBlue offered an ‘all you can jet’ pass, valid for a month, and it was a major success. Think about how YOU can challenge the existing pricing model of your industry and offer something different, and better.

10 Ways to Be Liked In Your Job Interview

According to a recent article published in Yahoo News, the following is a list of 10 ways that you can increase the likelihood of being liked during a job interview.  For the full article, please click here.

10 Ways to Be Liked in Your Job Interview [originally posted by Yahoo Hot Jobs]

  1. Don’t be a “smiley face.”Excessive smiling in a job interview is seen for what it is — nervousness and a lack of confidence.
  2. Don’t be a small-talker.Your job is to be knowledgeable about the company for which you’re interviewing.
  3. Don’t sweat. You can lose a job by wearing an undershirt or simply a little too much clothing. Sweaty palms or beads on your forehead will not impress.
  4. Don’t be a road block.Interviewers are seeking candidates eager to take on challenging projects and jobs. Hesitance and a nay-saying mentality will be as visible as a red tie — and seen as a negative.
  5. Don’t be petty.Asking the location of the lunchroom or meeting room will clue the interviewer into your lack of preparation and initiative. Prepare.
  6. Don’t be a liar.Studies show that employees lie frequently in the workplace. Lying won’t get you a job. In a job interview even a slight exaggeration is lying. Don’t.
  7. Don’t be a bad comedian.Humor tends to be very subjective, and while it may be tempting to lead your interview with a joke you’ve got to be careful about your material.
  8. Don’t be high-maintenance.Nobody hiring today is going to be looking for someone who’s going to be finicky about their workspace.
  9. Don’t be a time-waster.At every job interview, the prospective hire is given the chance to ask questions. Make yours intelligent, to the point, and watch the person across the desk for visual cues whether you’ve asked enough.
  10. Don’t be a switchblade. Normally the switchblade is thought of a backstabber, often taking credit for someone else’s work. In an interview setting, the switchblade can’t help but “trash talk” his former employer. If you make it seem like your former workplace was hell on Earth, it won’t bode well for the rest of the interview.

When I decided to start a blog last year, I didn’t really think that it would be much of a big deal. I knew a lot of casual bloggers out there, and none of them seemed to put much thought into it. They certainly didn’t get blogging advice anywhere. They just wrote down what they wanted to, whether it was relationship blogs, marketing and advertising reports, or just personal information about their day-to-day lives.

Some of them were professional bloggers while others were more casual in their occupation. All of them, however, seemed to take a pretty laid-back approach to putting their columns together.

Thinking back, it seems that blogging advice wouldve been helpful when I started. Blogging isnt exactly as easy as it sounds. There are several things you need to deal with when youre starting out.

First of all, you have to deal with layout issues. One of the hard facts about Internet blogging is that people are not going to read your blog unless you make it interesting looking. A webpage that looks completely dull and has bad layout is going to make eyes glaze over no matter what you have to say.

Having sites that are unappealing will make your readers lose interest before they even start clicking or reading anything. Of course, some sites have simple layouts and still gain a steady following. However, even with these weblogs, the people who made them took some time to think about the design of the site.

Another area I could have used blogging advice on was getting hits. My personal blog was also part of my business. I was sort of combining multiple features into it. On the one hand, I wanted a blog that I could use as a semi public journal. I could use it to inform my friends about what I was up to in my life.

Getting helpful advice about blogging at this point would have been extremely useful. It would have helped me create a web layout that was interesting to my readers, both friends and clients at the same time, and one that would entice new readers from Google searches.

Even without looking at a blogging guide, I did manage to figure it out eventually. It was slow going, and I think I wasted some time that would have been better spent on something else. Nonetheless, live and learn as they say. Next time, I will start with expert advice!

Who Said That?

What’s going on with taxi drivers? I was down in San Diego last weekend and on every trip I took around town, the taxi drivers decided on their own tip, by giving me back my change, LESS their tip! What’s up with that?!

This week’s ‘Ask Andrew’ question is all about web design from…a web designer. That’s okay. Many designers favor form over function, or marketing effectiveness. I’ll give my suggestions, including why you should NOT use flash in your web design if you want it to be found by the search engines.

The ‘nifty click’ resource is a company that enables you to create a bookstore quality book, with a minimum quantity of just one! Price varies according to how many you order, and the number of pages in the book.

The BIG marketing lesson comes from Jamba Juice, who have opened up a new market for themselves by offering a delivery service. Fax your order, and it can be delivered. The key lesson is widening out the way you do business.
